My Artistic Journey

Until a life altering experience, my life long artistic expression had been two dimensional black and white ink drawing. The subject matter was always animals with an exacting degree of realism. There was always a plan and never any spontaneity. When forced to find a new medium to express myself, somehow clay found itself into my world.

I was stunned with the spontaneity it allowed, the changes it graciously accepted and the surprises it produced. The biggest difference in my creative experience now, is approaching my studio daily without a single preconceived idea. Freedom from an expectation is a life altering dream for an artist like me. I wedge, roll, and build shapes until the most unexpected expressions, exaggerated features and delightful results present themselves on my animals. Their whimsy is my joy.

Clay allows me to combine strength, humor, and spirit by developing animals in a unique way. It brings whimsy and unconventional color to my expression. My hope is this work inspires others to look deeper into the animal's spirit in a more meaningful way. I hope you see their joy and maybe the wink of an eye.
